Hughes was founded by Frank in 1921 in Los tofte, Suffolk County. After serving in the First World War, he received training as an electrical engineer. Initially, the company modified the industrial engine for Los tofte's fishing fleet, but in 1928 Frank bought his first store. To this day, nearly 100 years later, it is still a real family business, and the third generation of family businesses led by Robert and Jeremy are now in power. Hughes quickly accepted and introduced new technologies such as televisions and labor-saving kitchen utensils. By leasing these products, they became affordable products for typical families in the post-war austerity period. Early equipment was notoriously unreliable, and the company's engineering background meant it had the ability to develop large service infrastructure to repair them. By the end of the 20th century, it had more than 30 shops and 5 service centers in East Anglia.
